Socotra is a gorgeous hidden island with mesmerizing scenery. Photographer Kristina Makeeva explored this island and captured the most beautiful places on the island. So come along and take a look.
Socotra is a Yemeni-owned island. It is in the Indian
Ocean off the coast of Somalia. If you have never heard of it, it is not a
surprise. Socotra is one of the isolated islands of continental (non-volcanic)
origin in the world.
This island separated from Africa about 6 million years
ago.
The island of Socotra faces all extremes in terms of
weather conditions. At times there is intense heat and drought, followed by
seasonal hurricane monsoons from May to September. Then the climate softens
dramatically in the winter months. Apart from that, mountainous regions have
special climatic conditions forming unique flora and fauna.
UNESCO identified the uniqueness of Socotra and the
importance of protecting it. That is why they named the island a World Heritage
site.
One of the major threats the island faces is the effect of climate change. Other than that, the anthropogenic impact is an issue as well. For example, goats eating young shoots of bottle trees, and the dragon tree threatens the endemics of Socotra island.
Dracaena cinnabari (Dragon tree) is the symbol of Socotra
which resembles a mushroom or umbrella. When you cut the bark of this tree, red
sap flows, which quickly solidifies. Locals have used crimson gum for medical,
veterinary, and cosmetic purposes since ancient times. People say that the
juice of Dracaena cinnabari stops bleeding during menstruation in women.
The dunes on the shores of the Ocean, pufferfish, and
bottle trees like sakura make the island unforgettable.
